DIY Plumbing: Applying Grout to Countertop Tiles

January 29, 2012

Plumbing contractors crystal lake illinois explain that applying grout to countertop tiles is necessary to protect the spaces between and underneath the tiles from accumulating dirt and grime. Reapplying a new coat of grout over your old dingy tiles can also give it new life, according to plumbers in algonquin illinois. In this article, lake in the hills plumbers detail the steps to applying grout to countertop tiles.

Grouting the countertop tiles is much easier compared to grouting the front apron of your kitchen sink. This tutorial, therefore, will concentrate on how to grout the front apron. Once you get the hang of it, you can simply apply the same technique to the rest of the countertop.

  1. Before you can start grouting the front apron, you will need to protect the surrounding surfaces first. Find a piece of cardboard that is large enough to cover the area around the front apron. Place the edge of the cardboard so that it is flush with the edge of the tiles and secure with masking tape. Ensuring a tight fit takes a little effort but it will save you lots of cleaning up later.
  2. Follow the manufacturer;s instructions for preparing the grout in a bucket.
  3. Using the grout float, start applying the grout to the apron tiles. The proper technique is to tilt the float at a 45 degree angle and spread the grout across the tiles and into the joints.
  4. Make sure that all joints are filled with grout, except the joints that border the sink.
  5. Once you have pushed grout into all the joints, use a damp sponge to wipe off the excess grout from the tiles. You need to do this as soon as possible, so that the grout will not have a chance to harden on top of the tiles.
  6. Allow the grout to sit for 30 minutes, so that it can set properly.
  7. You will observe a whitish haze on top of the entire tile surface. This can easily be removed using a damp lint-free towel. If you find some of the whitish haze still remain after the first wiping, just rinse the towel off and squeeze dry then give it another swipe.
  8. Let the grout dry for 24 hours. If you are grouting an already functioning kitchen cabinet, you may need to turn off the water supply to make sure that no one else in the household inadvertently uses the kitchen sink in the meantime.
  9. After the grout has dried and cured, placde a row of silicone caulking between the apron tiles and the sink. This will protect the joints from water damage.

Note: Grout can be irritating to the eyes and the skin. Make sure that you always wear safety goggles and handyman gloves when handling it.

A Must for a Memorable Party — Gas Outdoor Heaters

January 15, 2012

Propane Home Heaters : Propane Home Heaters - Buying Guide - ReviewsSeveral years ago, my husband and I attended an impromptu high school reunion at the home of one of his classmates. Of the seven students, who started kindergarten together, six were able to come to this party. Considering the fact they were all born in 1940, it was quite an event to celebrate. There were a total of 33 graduates who showed up. Most brought spouses so it turned into a sizable group. After dinner, we all gathered on the host’s patio to enjoy the crisp evening air while reminiscing and listening to the grads tell one hilarious tale after another. The hosts decided to turn their gas outdoor heaters on as it appeared that the party was going to last far into the night and that it would be quite chilly before we were through. The three heaters were amazing and very adequate in keeping the guests comfortable. Did I mention there was some alcohol involved at the party? Well, one man who evidently had been the class clown in his younger days, and had obviously not changed, had a snifter of brandy. He was standing right beside one of the heaters and decided to do a balancing act with his brandy on his forehead. Of course, everyone was laughing uproariously until he bumped into the gas outdoor heater and toppled his glass so the brandy splashed into the heater. The fire exploded at the contact with the brandy, and when the entertainer turned around his bushy eyebrows and handlebar mustache were spectacularly singed. Since he was not injured, except for his pride, the incident made for a most memorable party.

Semi Frameless Glass Pool Fences

January 9, 2012

Opting for semi frameless glass pool fences is friendly to your budget than buying steel fences. Plus, buying semi frameless fences need minimal maintenance. The posts that attach the glass to the floor surface are slim and rust proof. The Australian government prohibits people from owning a pool unless you set up a perimeter fence for the protection of your little kids. Pool owners need to meet specific standards when it comes to the glass panels’ height, the materials you will use for your fence and so on and so forth. As mentioned in the beginning, glass pool fences save you more money because you either choose to install the fence or ask a professional to help you out. Before making a decision, ensure that you are dealing with superior workmanship and quality products. When you ask a professional for help, make sure to bring up any concerns or questions you may have.

Prevention of Theft Though the Installation of Window Tinting

December 22, 2011

It is not only the large commercial buildings and households that could benefit from window tinting. Factories and warehouses also could benefit if you find the right film to use. Very often thefts of goods from warehouses occur because outsiders could see things that are stored inside stores. In order to prevent this free view, you have the option to use tinted film.

When certain tinted films are applied on glass window panes, outsiders are not able to see the goods inside and this prevents burglaries to a great extent as there is hardly any inducement for such acts. The same films could be used in Factories also.

Shielding factory workers from the view of outsiders could save their privacy to a great extent. Theft of machinery could occur as a result of allowing free view of plant and machinery in factories to outsiders. These are just a few benefits you could derive from the use of tinting film on windows.

Be Careful when Buying a Dehumidifier

December 14, 2011

Have you ever bought a dehumidifier without reading dehumidifier reviews first? I did, and it turned out to be a collossal mistake. I bought a horrible unit. It looked good in the store. The sales guy talked it up real well. I felt really good about myself bringing it home and setting it up. Until 2 months later when the motor froze and never started back up. What a waste of money I thought. Well, at least it had a warranty. I only had to pay $25 to ship it to the manufacturer and then another $45 to have it shipped back to me. Well, it is the wrong word. They sent me a refurbished replacement unit back to me. This one lasted 6 weeks and I had to go through the process again. That is the last time I will ever deal with that manufacturer. I spent as much on shipping as I did on the original dehumidifier!
